Ride for Dads Captains

Mary Caulder

Co-Captain

Joined Team: 2005

My father, Jack Caulder, lived with cancer - or the anticipation of its return - for almost 30 years. He was a strong man and a strong willed person who fought every battle with all he had and won each time the disease presented itself.

Towards the end of 2016, the cancer had come back and was in his joints.

Having been weakened by previous treatments and their lingering side effects, Dad became overwhelmed by the thought of going through it all again. He succumbed to the disease in April, 2017.

I joined forces with Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team in Training (TNT) and have worked with them since 2005 because I believe, someday, we will live in a world where the words "You have cancer." will be followed by, "…but we can cure it."

Valerie Antkowiak

Co-Captain

Joined Team: 2011

My father, Jerry Antkowiak, was diagnosed with non-hodgkins lymphoma in 1995. He managed to survive a stage IV diagnosis for more than ten years before losing the final battle in 2006.

This will be my eighth season of training for the goal ride around Lake Tahoe while raising funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team in Training (TNT). I have seen firsthand how their research dollars have helped dramatically improve the treatments and therapies available, and how much has changed since my dad has passed. It is a privilege to be able to raise money to help save others from this disease.

Seven years ago, a friend told us about Team in Training and suggested we check it out. For some reason we decided to join, for me because I needed to get in shape and I remembered my youth riding bikes all over Upstate New York.

Now after riding 7 times around Lake Tahoe for LLS, I’m still doing it for my health but more importantly for raising funds for an important cause. What I’ve learned over the years has been an eye opener. And as a bonus we’ve made some really good friends who like us continue to ride and continue to raise money for LLS.

So this year we ride again with our goal to raise $200,000 with Team Ride for Dads.

Please join us on our journey, and even if you can’t, be sure to donate to the team or your favorite Ridefordads teammate.

When I first joined Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Team in Training (TNT), I did so mainly to get myself off the couch.

Before long, however, it became clear that by fundraising, being vocal to anyone who would listen and simply making myself and my TNT team gear visible out on the trails, I was becoming a part of the bigger picture. Part of the journey towards a cure for cancer.

This will be my fifth season training with TNT’s cycle team in preparation for the ride around Lake Tahoe.

Like most people reading this, I have seen the effects cancer can have on, not only the diagnosed individual, but their friends and family, as well. This is why I was eager to join forces with Mary, Valerie and Mark in an effort to raise enough money (and more!) to fund cancer research grants in Mary and Valerie’s father’s names.
